During the one-day World Mayors Summit , leaders of 138 municipalities developed the Global Cities Covenant on Climate to voluntary reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. Also called “The Mexico City Pact,” the document outlines how the cities have voluntarily committed to ten initiatives to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. The cities will ensure transparency and accountability of their actions through regular reporting to the newly-launched carbon Cities Climate Registry.
The Pact has been signed just before the November 29 opening of COP16, also taking place in Mexico. Representatives will present the Pact to COP16 participants, who are not expected to develop any binding treaties during the meeting (see Lead Up to Cancun, Delphi’s previous coverage).
