Manager, Technical Services, Calgary

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager, Technical Services, Calgary is responsible for providing project management duties within the technical services area of Delphi as well as performing advanced analytical tasks. The majority of the work will relate to GHG emissions and emission reductions, but may also include other environmental impacts and related areas. The role requires excellent client support skills, including clear communications, analytical and strategic competencies, and an appetite for taking the initiative around opportunities as they present themselves. The manager will work closely with our Calgary-based Vice-President and will be supported by research and technical analysts located in other Delphi offices, though the manager will still be required to directly undertake analysis and research depending on the project and available resources.
Managers are expected to participate in the company’s corporate social responsibility activities and undertake administrative tasks as requested.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Projects
- Manage and provide expert advice and support on a range of technical projects large and small. For larger / more complicated projects, additional support would be provided to the manager from senior management. The manager would be expected to independently lead small & medium sized projects, following a suitable orientation / training period.
- Prepare project timelines, budgets and reports on project progress.
- Take a lead role in maintaining ongoing communication with clients.
- Maintain communication with project team, initiate team meetings when necessary, monitor staff efforts to ensure projects stay on budget and on time.
- Undertake analytical, research and general project work including development of analytical tools, analysis of technologies, processes, and research findings, writing reports, preparation of tables and graphs, undertaking interviews, etc.
- Provide clients with professional insight, strategy, and analysis around topic initiatives or projects.
Proposals
- Development of proposals including taking the lead on the overall coordination and writing the majority of proposal sections, leveraging Delphi analyst and administrative staff as appropriate.
Specific GHG / Technical Responsibilities
- Serve as a specialist in the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions and reductions, and other environmental metrics.
- Perform project and program assessments and feasibility studies to estimate or report on actual greenhouse gas emission reductions and environmental co-benefits associated with specific initiatives/projects.
- Consider the implications of GHG policy and legislation when preparing GHG analyses for projects and organizations
- Assist in developing GHG reduction strategies and valuation models for clients.
- Undertake web and literature research for specific projects.
- Perform consultation activities including telephone interviews, one-on-one consultation, survey development, etc., as needed.
- Preparation of and assistance with the development of company proposals, draft reports and key subject briefs including content review and preparation, format and presentation enhancement, etc.
- Act as a general resource for technical and technological aspects of GHG reducing projects and activities.
- Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to manage client expectations, demands and concerns
- Experience leading a project team
- Ability to prioritize, multitask and organize work efficiently, in order to meet budgetary and timeline constraints
- Possess strong writing skills and proficiency in the development and use of spreadsheets and other standard software packages
- Advanced analytical, problem solving and communication skills
- 4-7 years employment experience working as an engineer, technical analyst, or equivalent
- A university degree in science or engineering and/or equivalent experience, including demonstrated ability to approach problems from an engineering perspective and general comfort level with analyzing and assessing relevant processes and technologies.

Research & Projects - General Responsibilities
- Support projects, with the accountability for delivering research, analysis and general project support to senior management.

Environmental Benefits Quantification and Reporting Specialist, Ottawa

POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of this position is to manage the data collection and reporting associated with the environmental impact quantification for a not-for-profit funding organization with a large investment portfolio in the clean technology sector. This includes internal validation of the environmental impacts for the portfolio projects at various stages of the development, and interfacing with multiple stakeholders including third party experts throughout the process from establishment of initial forecasts to final results reporting.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Scope
The Environmental Benefits Quantification and Reporting Specialist administers and maintains the process for documenting, tracking, and reporting on the environmental benefits that accrue as a result of funded projects. Quantification of GHG emission reductions, clean air, clean soil, and clean water benefits is required for all investments. The appropriate quantification methodology relative to a specific technology using best practices needs to be applied throughout the lifecycle of the project.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Review and validate environmental impacts quantification for all projects going through the application process including analysis of assumptions and establishment of the necessary baselines.
- Participate and contribute in the development of new quantification methodologies specially in the areas of clean water, soil and air.
- Follow-up with external and internal stakeholders in the execution of the role.
- Monitor and track all changes throughout the lifecycle process of the portfolio by managing and maintaining the environmental reporting data through the project execution and post-project completion period.
- Coordinate the consolidated reporting of the portfolio’s environmental impacts to meet the needs of multiple stakeholders including evaluations and performance reporting.
- Interface with external environmental quantification experts as required to ensure that environmental impacts are properly quantified for all funded projects.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing processes for efficiently capturing and updating data on environmental benefits throughout the evolution of funded projects from development through to commercialization.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in environmental sciences, chemical or environmental engineering or similar technical discipline or equivalent experience
- Training in ISO 14064 requirements for project environmental impact quantification
Experience
- 3 years or more of relevant work experience including prior experience with environmental benefit quantification and reporting programs (e.g. Environmental Canada GHG Inventory, Technology Early Action Measures (TEAM) Program, Pilot Emission Removal, Reductions and Learning (PERRL) program or National Offset Program)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced computer skills in MS Word, and Excel
- Solid understanding of system mass and energy balances
- Experience with a range of environmental technologies (renewables, soil and water remediation, clean air etc.)
- Knowledge and experience with data base administration, queries and reporting
- Strong analytical skills
- Well organized, detail oriented, and ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
